The radiator is the spare part in a diesel generator that transfers the heat from the engine coolant to the surrounding air. When working correctly, this method keeps the engine from overheating.
The radiator has fins and pipes. The engine coolant is pumped through the pipes. This coolant is hot, coming from the engine and as it passes through the radiator pipes, the heat transfers to the fins. The radiator will have a fan which rotates, either driven by electric motors or from the engine's crankshaft by a series of pulleys and belts. This fan blows cool ambient air via radiator fins. The heat at the fins starts transfering to the cool air, heating it up, taking the heat away from the engine. The coolant, not cooled by this airflow, returns to the engine and the process repeats.
First, the diesel generator radiator, maintenance cycle is of 500 hours of operation. Radiators have a vital role in a diesel generator set. It is used for heat dissipation. Oftentimes, it will affect the normal operation of the genset without proper maintenance or incorrect use of the radiator.
1. Outside cleaning:
In a polluted or dusty environment, the gap of the radiator may be jammed by insects or fragments, which will affect the efficiency of the radiator. Regular cleaning of these light deposits can be done with detergent and low pressure hot water. Spray steam or water in the front side of the radiator to the fan. It is from the opposite direction, the dirt will be blown into the center. When using this method, the diesel engine and AC generator should be covered with cloth. For stubborn sediments, removal can not be done by the above-mentioned method. Disassemble the radiator and soak it in the hot alkaline water for about 25 minutes, then wash it with hot water.
2. Internal descaling:
• Drain the water from the radiator, and then the close the pipe connected to the radiator;
• Pour 45 degrees into the radiator of 4% of the acid solution, after 15 minutes dry acid solution, check the radiator;
• The groove still has scale, then with 8% of the acid solution to wash again;
• After descaling with 3% of the alkali solution neutralization twice, and then rinse three times or more with clean water;
• After all the work is done, check if the radiator leaks, and apply for external repair if it leaks;
• If no water leakage is re-installed, the radiator should be refilled with clean water and add a rust inhibitor.
1. Usually, corrosion is the main cause for radiator damage. In the method of using, the air in the water will accelerate the corrosion process. Hence, performing regular maintenance for the pipe joint is quite necessary to avoid leaking. Meanwhile, do not forget to steadily add water to drain air from the top of the radiator.
Note: Radiators should not be partially injected with water, which will speed up corrosion. For non-working DG sets, water should be completely removed or fully filled. If possible, please use distilled water or natural soft water and add an appropriate amount of anti rust agent.
2. Coolant of the working radiator is generally very hot and with pressure, you are not allowed to tidy the radiator or dismantle the pipes before cooling; do not work on the radiator and while the fan is still rotating do not open the protection cover.
